Personalities

A lot of prominent people were born and worked or still work in Strakonice. The fields of their activities were various (e. g. film, music, medicine, literature etc.).
Strakonice – a picturesque town on the confluence of the rivers Otava and Volyňka is inseparably connected with folk bagpipe music. The tradition of bagpipe playing became a basis for contemporary International bagpipe festivals and regular meetings of bagpipers from all over the world which are held every 2 years.

František Ladislav Čelakovský (7. 3. 1799 - 5. 8. 1852)
- a poet of the The National Revival
- an inspiration with his native background could be found in his works: V růži stolisté or Ohlas písní českých
- the town Strakonice commemorated his 125th birth anniversary by a gala party on 14 June 1924 and unveiling 
  a marble monument
- in the Bezděkovská street you can see the life-sized statue of F. L. Čelakovský made by the National Artist 
  Břetislav Benda
- another statue of F. L. Čelakovský is situated in the elementary school bearing his name

Father Josef Šmidinger (24. 10. 1801 - 2. 2. 1852)
- in 1843 he founded a library in Strakonice from his own financial resources – nowadays bearing his name – 
  Šmidingerova knihovna
- his tablet is located at the front door of Česká spořitelna on the Big Square, there used to be Šmidinger´s
  native house 

Josef  Režný (*2. 12. 1924)
- a prominent personality, an expert in bagpipe music
- he became a co-founder and organizer of South Bohemian Music and Dance Festivals in Strakonice (1955 – 1961),
  later the International Bagpipe Festivals in Strakonice
- at present he is a chairman of the programme council of the International Bagpipe Festivals
- author of the books International Bagpipe Festivals in Strakonice and Bagpipers in the Prácheňsko region
- to his 80th jubilee was edited the book „5.000 years with bagpipes“

Josef Skupa (16. 1. 1892 - 8. 1. 1957)
- a prominent personality of the Czech and world puppet theatre
- author of the world-famous wooden puppets Spejbl and Hurvínek
- in 1945 he founded the Theatre of Spejbl and Hurvínek in Prague
- the town keeps the puppet tradition by an annual organising a show of amateur puppet groups called 
  Skupovy Strakonice

Zdeněk Troška (*18. 5. 1853)
- a director of a famous film trilogy Slunce, seno... with characteristic features of South Bohemian village life
- he directed films: Bota jménem Melichar, Kameňák 1, 2, 3
                  children stories: O princezně Jasněnce a létajícím ševci, Princezna ze mlejna 1, 2, Z pekla štěstí 1, 2
